About two and a half years ago, I went to England for my grad trip. I had gotten a tattoo in Montreal the year before, so I was dying to do something new (it had been a year, after all). At that point, all I had pierced were my ear lobes (twice in each year) and my helix. I wasn't ready for major mods at that point, so I picked the most logical, pretty, and sexy option: my belly button. This sounded pretty good, because I could keep it a secret from my parents and if they did find out, I knew they probably wouldn't mind if I went to a good piercing studio.

We kept hopping from city to city every day or couple of days, which made finding a good shop a little difficult. In Bournemouth, we found a place that we thought would be open and be a good place to go, but it was closed by the time we got there after a mandatory dinner. we were pretty disappointed, and wondering if we would be able to get it done at all. On our second to last full day there, two girls found a shop and did get both of their navels pierced. But later that day, we were in another city, and the four of us found a fabulous little shop when we left (another) tour of a church.
After a bit of searching, we managed to find Asgard Body, a very small place, but it was very clean and very well managed. We all liked Angie right away. We found out that we could have a captive bead ring or a curved barbell. We were pretty happy, because you can usually only have a captive bead ring at first in Canada. After choosing our jewellery, I chose a surgical stainless steel curved barbell with a big diamond in the bottom, we started going in to get pierced. Katie went, then Miesha went, then Miki (my best friend at the time) and I went in. Miki wanted to go first, because she thought she would chicken out if she saw me do it first. She can be a bit of a pussy that way. After she was done, Angie explained to me the whole autoclaving process of all reusable tools, and that the needles were sterile one use only tools as she set up for my piercing and autoclaved my jewellery. Then she had me stand up so she could mark me. Once she was satisfied with the plac ement and that I was suitable for the piercing, she told me to lie back on the little bed.
The next part really surprised me. Angie then sprayed my belly button with a local anaesthetic. Needless to say, all my nerves melted away pretty quick at that point. After the anaesthetic had a chance to work, she clamped me, and before I knew it, the 14 gauge needle was through and she had put the jewellery in. I was completely frozen and didn't feel a thing. When the bandage was on, Angie told Miki and I the after care, just washing with mild soap and applying witch hazel three times a day and no high waisted pants. Sounded a lot better then the iodine-type spray the other two girls who got theirs' done before us were told.
As we walked back to the meeting spot, we were all in total exhilaration of what we just did. Of course it was just our belly buttons, but for a bunch of preppy girls on vacation in Europe, it was almost as good as a Prada sample sale. Then we went out for pizza, and compared how much we bled. I barely bled at all, just a tiny little spot. No complaints there. Some of the other girls bled a lot.
Two days later, on our flight back home to Canada, I managed to get my new barbell stuck on my seat belt. That was pretty painful, but my two biggest pieces of advice would be to A) don't tape it up under a dress (it gets infected) and B) don't let your boyfriend's tongue piercing get caught on it, because that hurts a lot too. All of this happened over two years ago. In my now old age, I still love it and think everybody who can get one and wants one should get it. I want to add four more. It is a very fun, cute, and oh so sexy piercing that both you and all the men who like you will love a lot.
