Ever since the sixth grade I've wanted to get my belly button pierced. My parents were totally against it from the beginning, but I still loved the way it looked. I bought fake ones with my friends; one time I told my dad it was real and he flipped out. When Christmas came around they started asking me what I wanted for my Sweet 16 in January, and I thought about it and didn't know of anything in-particular that appealed to me. Finally it occurred to me that I could at least ask them for the belly button piercing again. So I did, and of course my parents didn't want me to. I was not about to give up what I'd wanted for about four years, so I did research on the internet about places that did belly button piercing.
While doing my research, I came across an article about doctors piercing your belly button, but more than likely they weren't as experienced in that area and had a greater risk of turning out different. So, I continued looking up information and I came across this site. I found stories about successful piercings at Annapolis Fun City. Annapolis is only about an hour from where I live, and the information seemed safe and appealing to go have my belly done there. I collected all the information for my parents and gave it to them to look over. Finally, they agreed for my sweet 16 I could have my belly button pierced! I was so excited!
This past weekend (1/11/03) my parents and I drove down to find the tattoo and piercing place. I was so excited, and all my friends knew I was going to get it done today. We got down there an hour before they opened and sat on the parking lot looking in the window for a couple minutes. Now, the place looked a little "cheesy, kinky, and cheap" to my parents, but they are kind of strict about where I go and what I do, so it was expected. We talked for a little bit, and my parents said they refused to let me get it done at a place like that. My mom was determined for me to go have it done with a doctor, but I reminded her of that article. She was still stubborn and explained I wasn't going to have it done at the tattoo place. I told her most of the places I knew of were both tattoo and piercing, and that started off a huge argument. My dad drove down to Main Street and we ate lunch. We discussed the issue, but it didn't seem like they were going to budge. I told my dad t he least he could do was check it out and ask questions before we left to go back home. To make a long story short, we ended up dropping by to ask questions. The lady was very laid back and explained the needle and clamp and everything was sterile. It was either auto-clave or cleaned in Bedadine before she used it on me. My parents thought that everything sounded okay, and they weren't expecting that. (They did say I was right and they're glad they stopped to see about it for me).
I walked into the back area and sat down on a chair. I'm horrible with needles, so my mom had to be right there next to me. Of course she was checking out to make sure the whole bit was sterilized and she asked a lot of questions. I asked for the ansthetic, which was an extra $20, but I thought it would be worth it. So she rubbed the gel on my stomach in the area she was going to pierce. While we were waiting for it to sink in she explained what she'd be doing to me. After she thought the gel sat long enough she rubbed it off, and took the clamp to hold my skin in place. I closed my eyes and reached for my mom's hand, as scared as I am! I guess the ansthetic didn't work, because I felt the needle go through and I flinched. It was a sharp pinch, but it only lasted a couple seconds. She put the ring through and I was done. I felt a little dizzy/light headed, so I lay in the chair for a couple minutes. Then I got up and it was done. It was a little red, but it looked gr eat!
She gave us instructions for how to clean it and when so it would heal quicker. I was so thrilled that I had it done. Of course she said it would sting the first couple hours, and it did. But it wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be. This happened yesterday (from when I'm writing this story) and I slept fine on it and it doesn't even bother me anymore. Of course the Bedadine I use to clean it with stings a little bit, but that's normal for the first week. It looks great and this place was really good about being clean with everything they used.
