When I was in the seventh grade, my best friend got her belly button pierced when she was in Florida visiting family. I was 12 and I thought that it was the coolest thing ever. As you may know everyone wants to fit in in junior high, so I was down right determined to pierce my belly.

Like any right minded people talking to their twelve year old daughter about body piercing, they said "no" and stood to it firmly. Now part of this was because I was only twelve, the other part was because my dad is a doctor and was freaking out about the health risks.
So years passed and there were times when I thought that navel piercings were really really cool, like at the Sadie Hawkins dance when all the girls in my group wore belly shirts, and one girl had hers pierced, or on vacation anywhere warm. But I am not one of those people who has wanted nothing but her belly button pierced for like 1200 years or anything.
So,now I am 16, and my good friend Melissa approached me on Thursday and said, "Manda, guess what? I'm getting my belly button pierced on Sunday!....wanna come?" and I thought that I would just come and watch or whatever but then I was thinking about how cool they are and decided I kinda wanted one too. It was totally random but I felt like being spontaneous.
So the next day I am talking to my parents and I ask them if I can get it done. They said they would think about it overnight and tell me Saturday morning. So I decided not to tell anyone that I was maybe going to get it done or mention it at all. Saturday morning rolled around and my mom said yes, that I could. The only thing my dad really cared about was that my mom or myself saw the guy take the needle and barbell out of a package and that it was sterile.
I was so nervous for 2 days leading up to it and I was freaking out. I told one friend (my best) but no one else. Melissa and her mom, sister, and one of our mutual friends came to pick my mom and I up Sunday afternoon to go. After the 15 minute ride there I was so nervous and shaking in my boots.
We went upstairs, and I was going first. I picked out my barbell, a cute one with a diamond-like gem on one end and an aqua-marine-like one on the other. I was so nervous! I hopped in the chair and the guy fumbled around forever! He then cleaned my belly button, marked it and I looked at the marking in the mirror and showed my mom, we both approved. I sat back in the chair and he clamped me, I didn't think it hurt at all like a alot of people do. He got the needle and at this point I stopped watching.
I squeezed my mom's hand and he shoved the needle through, and it did hurt, but only for a split second. I said Jesus Chriost under my breath cause i didn't wanna freak out Melissa. I then looked down at my stomach to see the needle sticking out of my skin...it was creepy yet kinda cool. He then pulled the needle through with the barbell on the end of it and screwed the other end on. With that I was done. Now it was Melissa's turn.
She sat in the chair, but not as nervously as I had. She didn't watch me because she didn't want to freak herself out. So with her mom by her side, the guy cleaned her, marked her, and clamped her. I was watching because I wanted to see how it was done, and what just happened to me. He took out the needle and god, it was huge! Not to mention hollow. I watched him push it through her skin and Melissa flinched.
Now he pushed the barbell through and was attempting to screw the other end on but it was kinda mishapen so he had to take it out and get a new one. This was a little tramatic for her stomach and everyone else their but she didn't seem to mind. It started to bleed slightly, but he got it on and she was done too. We looked at our cute tummys and pranced off the car where juice and Cheez-its were awaiting us for a snack.
It was definately worth it because I have a cute little belly button now! It made my stomach look more toned (and who doesn't love that?!?!) and I can't wait to show it off to my soon to be shocked friends! Anyone who wants it done...do it! Its totally worth the minor pain! Thanks guys and I hope I helped you!
So far it hasn't been to uncomforable, but there is a little dried blood around the metal. The guy told us to clean it with bactene and wassh it with antibacterial soap to prevent infection. He said swimming and working out werent a problem if you properly cleaned it afterwards. I was pumped. And thats my story! I hope it helps you!
PS...bring your mom and hold her hand...it helps!
