About a year ago someone mentioned the prospect of belly button piercings to me. I was completely against the idea and protested that 'it's completely un-safe' and 'not worth the hassle of infection', oh and of course 'just think what would happen if in the future you got pregnant!'. My friends agreed with me and that was that. At that time everyone (apart from my group of friends) were having their belly's pierced and we thought that to some extent it was getting common and trashy. At this point I was sure I would NEVER get my belly button pierced.

Six months later and the hype around belly button piercings had died down, most of them had been removed because most of the people couldn't be bothered anymore and the attention had been turned to eyebrow piercings! My mum asked me one night what would I say if she got her belly button pierced? Me being me was totally up for the idea because I didn't think she would have the bottle to have it done. However, there was a catch.....I would have to have it done too! Well seen as I didn't think she was going to have it done I said yes. Mum said that I should look into, see how much it would cost, etc, then we would get it done in the holidays.

The holidays came and I'd found out any information needed. Mum said we would have to wait till Wednesday to go because Wednesday is 'payday' and it would cost at least £60 for us both to have it done. I woke up on Monday morning of that week ready to start some coursework then mum told me to get dressed quickly so we could catch the next bus into town. We got into town and she broke it to me that we weren't going shopping, we were going to Blue Banana to get pierced. I was really shocked that she was actually going to go ahead with it. I told mum I would go first (stupid me!) and tell her what it was like, she filled out some forms and I picked my jewellery, and was quite annoyed because I had to have a normal run of the mill titanium bar because of new EU rules instead of the pretty silver flower bar. We went for a drink while they sterilised the bar for 20 minutes. Then the time came.

I was nervous but excited. Tina took me through the shop into the piercing and tattoo area. She had loads of piercings herself and a massive tattoo that covered the whole of her back so I knew I must be in the hands of a professional. There were two small white rooms next to each other, one for tattoos which had a large hells angel type guy sat tattooing someone and another empty room. Tina took me there and told me to lay down on this sort of hospital bed. She looked at my belly button and cleaned it. Then she put the clamp on which hurt the most, it was like a really hard pinching pain. Then she froze my belly button using this liquid stuff (I didn't really want to watch). Then all of a sudden I felt like a pin prick near my stomach somewhere and then I felt the skin pull a bit. I looked at my mum and she told me it was done. I couldn't believe it! Tina used a mirror to show me it and then covered it with medicated patch. She gave me a leaflet on aftercare and told me to b uy some tea tree oil from the counter.

After I left the shop my belly button hurt, we had to catch the bus home so I had to try and sit as flat as I could. I got home and just laid flat on the sofa watching TV. After about an hour it had stopped hurting and it just felt like I'd got a plaster on my stomach. Then it dawned on me.....mum hadn't got hers done!!! I went in and asked her why she hadn't got hers done, 'Oh I think I'll have to wait till the next holidays to get mine done, I'll have more money then' was her answer. I couldn't believe it!! What a wuss! Well it's an hour since then and Dad doesn't know I've had it done and only one of my friends know, I can't wait to see what they all say and after the next 6 months I'm going to get that silver flower! My belly button is pretty cool and I'm dead pleased I got it done. After all live for today you never know what tomorrow will bring!

Mail me if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them.
