I always wanted my belly button pierced, but of course my parents thought it was a bad idea. "What if it gets infected? I heard if that happens, u can't have children." "What if when you're older, u don't want it anymore?" "You can get it done when your 17" (I was only 12 at the time.)

This was not going to work, my friend was getting it next week, and I just had to get it done before her.

So there I was, in my room, with one of my friends. We both had Elma on our Navels, and were waiting for the hour to be up. It was just about 10pm, we took off the Elma and she laid down on my bed and I went about piercing her belly button. 20 minutes later I had finally gotten the needle through. Now it was her turn to pierce mine. She tried to pierce the top, but it wouldn't work, so she did the bottom instead.

Now we both had Navel piercings that were barely through the skin, with extremely bad placement!

The next day at school, we decided they looked horrible, and took them out before even telling anyone we had them. Well, somehow everyone found out, including my parents. Of course I got the "Why would you do that?" and the "That has to be the stupidest thing you've ever done." lectures. But they didn't get as mad as I had thought they would.

My friend that I had done the piercing with went away for the summer and had her Navel pierced when she got back. I spent the next week begging my parents to let me get mine done. Of course the answer was no.

About a year later, a month before my 14th birthday, we were having the all too familiar talk about whether or not I could get it pierced. They claimed I couldn't get it done because I already had 14 other piercings (all on my ears, just lobe and cartilage), and because if they let me get that done, what would I want next? (I had already asked for tongue and tragus.) I then made a deal with my father that if they let me get my Navel done, I wouldn't even consider asking for another piercing for 3 years (until I was 17...go figure.) My mom later told me she felt like slapping my father when he said I could get it done.

They said I had to pay for it myself, which I understood, because they didn't want me to get it done in the first place, but the only problem was I had absolutely no money, and didn't know when I would have any. I don't get an allowance, and I wanted this done as soon as possible. I phoned the studio, to find out how much it would cost. I told my dad how much it was, and he told me to make the appointment for that Friday, and that he would pay for it, Yay!!

So, that Friday, My father, 2 of my best friends, and me all went to the studio. I filled out the form, got my dad to sign it, then started to get nervous. I had had all my piercings done with the gun, even 6 in one session, but this was going to be different, this wasn't just my ears at some shop in the mall, this was my belly button.

The piercer, (I think his name might've been Steve....) showed me two hoops, both were 14g but one was smaller than the other, I chose the larger one because I thought it would be more noticeable and the small one just didn't look right. I chose my bead, white because I thought it would match everything.

Then Steve made me stand in front of him, and he cleaned my belly button, and then drew some dots on me, and asked me to lie down on his table. My friends began to lose interest, and started asking Steve questions about the snake in the cage, sitting in the corner of the shop.

Then Steve put the penningtons on me, making sure he could see his dots on both sides. He got the needle ready, and my friends watched as he put it through. I heard both my friends go "eww", and saw them look away, and I felt just a slight pinch, and realized that my ear piercings had hurt more. Unfortunately, Steve missed his top dot, and the piercing was ever so slightly crooked, but not enough for anyone just looking at it to notice. I then tried to get my father to buy the bumper sticker that said "we pierced and tattooed your honours student!" He didn't find it as amusing as we did.

We left the studio, and on the way home stopped and got the Betadine Steve suggested.

Four months later, I had been looking for barbells, my piercing wasn't quite healed, but I was getting excited about the prospect of changing the jewelry. I bought two barbells, one with a red jewel on the top and bottom balls, and one with a sort of opally jewel on the bottom. When I got home I couldn't help but change them even though they weren't healed. I was lucky, I didn't tear anything, and it looked really cool, except for the big glob of pus that exited the top hole as I put the barbell through. I then began changing my barbells as often as I changed clothes, because "they had to match what I was wearing." And one day, the inevitable happened. I tore the inner tube of skin, and it started to bleed a little, and it was pussing again...and there I go back to day 1 of the healing process. I put my hoop back in so I could clean it properly, and 4 months later, it was 100% healed.

I am now looking into getting my navel stretched, because I've seen some pictures of it on BME and it looks absolutely awesome!!!
