I had been interested in the idea of body and facial piercings since the age of about 15,when I was involved in the grunge/punk scene and many of my friends had some kind of tattoo or piercing. I never quite summoned up the courage or the confidence however to actually aquire any myself but the idea still largely appealed to me. A few years passed however and I more or less turned my back on that whole teen rebellion thing and stopped mixing in those circles and inevitabley, the idea of getting pierced was relegated to the back of my mind.

I thought it looked great, and instantly wanted one myself, but still, I didn't quite have the guts. The amount of navel piercings worn by the great and the good in the media made me long even more for a belly piercing and I decided to take the plunge during the two weeks I had already booked off work. I phoned the nearest piercing studio which I already knew had a good reputation for proficiency and cleanliness and foolishly thought I could get an appointment. To my utter disappointment however, they had no gaps and were fully booked up during this period. I think that secretly I was glad as I was scared, but I knew that once I had booked it I would go, so I wanted it done before I changed my mind...but hey these things happen.
Once again I waited a few weeks and put the notion to the back of my mind, until my friend (her name's Claire) was talking about hers and the jealosy fired up in me and she said that she'd ring up and try to book an appointment on my behalf. My luck must have been in that day as she managed to get an appointment for the coming Saturday at 5:30pm to be exact. The few days that I had to wait were filled with a mixture of nerves and excitement. I still didn't quite know if I could go through with it but the day soon came and Claire came and picked me up at about 5:15.I got the customary "advice" that I'm "Stupid" or "Mad" from my parents...but doesn't everyone?
Claire reassured me in the car that I would be okay,and within five minutes,I was opening the door of the piercing studio.The place looked suitabley clean,I went to the desk and said I had come for a navel piercing,payed my money and picked my jewelry.We both waited,not too long and I was called when the guy was ready.Claire stayed in the waiting area and I went forth...to what exactly I didn't quite know. I lay down on the bench and the guy marked with some kind of pen where the piercing would go ,I told him I was happy ( well it looked okay to me-I guess he must have known what he was doing?!)and sprayed a kind of numbing spray on my tummy, I was gonna take all the help I could get! He clamped the area with...well I guess they were clamps they, looked like barbecue tongs to me, and in went the needle. Although I felt it, I felt absolutely no pain whatsoever .He asked if I was okay and I went out to meet Claire .I felt soooo good, I had a great new tummy piercing, and it didn't even hurt! I was handed a card at the front desk about cleaning, playing, swimming etc. I really wanted to keep looking at it, but I couldn't right away as I had to keep it covered for at least an hour with the dressing they put on for me. I went home and felt fine. I was starting to feel it a little...the numbing spray must have worn off, but it was a little uncomfortable, but not unbearable. I sat down for an hour but couldn't wait to show my family...they would love it when they saw it. When the dressing finally did come off , my parents still said I was mad, but I think they secretly liked it, they'd probably even say it looked sexy if it wasn't on their daughter!
This all happened yesterday, and it's bled a little overnight but nothing serious. It looks absolutely great and I'm still not feeling any real discomfort. I want to change the jewelry badly, but I'm told I have to keep the same one in for 3 months so it looks like I'm going to have to wait. I want a jewel set barbell with a dangly jewel hanging off it, I think that will look great.
As for anyone else out there considering it, go for it, I like mine so much, I may even consider going further, maybe getting my nipple or tongue pierced. All I've got to do now is keep it clean and keep it safe and all should come good. I'll keep you all posted if I get anything else done.
