So maybe I'm too young to get pierced. Maybe I'm older than most. That depends on the person. My mom wasn't too happy when I told her I wanted to get my Monroe pierced, but after days of bothering her, she decided to let me. Not even a month before, I had gotten my belly button pierced for my birthday. But the newness of that was rubbing off, and I had wanted a Monroe for a while. After getting the forty dollars I was going to use, we decided to go on a Friday night after we ate dinner. My mother was still apprehensive about it, because school started in about 10 days. I mean, I'm in eighth grade.

I love the way piercings look, and I knew it was becoming a new addiction. My mom won't let me get anymore, or so she says. I wanted to go to the same place that I had my belly button done, because the piercer, Josh, was super nice, and understood why I loved piercings. We pulled into the parking lot, and I pretty much ran up the steps to the shop. Walking in the door, Josh greeted us and asked who was getting something pierced. I told him I wanted to get my Monroe done, and he agreed that it would look good with my facial structure. I asked about the labret studs I could get, and I really wanted a rhinestone one. But seeing that the piercing will swell, he had to put a longer internally threaded stud in, with a ball about the size of the top of a normal belly button ring. I was unhappy with the size, so he told me to come back once it was done swelling, and he'd put a shorter stud with a rhinestone ball on it. We walked back into the piercing room, which is brightly lit. It was familiar, and I felt at home. I automatically sat on the table, knowing the drill. When he told me to lie down, it came as a bit of a shock. Seeing my friends get nose piercings, they had been sitting up. But I was told that this would keep me from jumping around. He handed me a cup of Listerine, and I swished it around in my mouth, then spit it back in the cup.
He got all of his supplies out, and laid them on the rolling instrument holder thing. He took the clamps out of the package and laid them out. Then came the Q-tips, and the marking stuff, along with a toothpick to place it. Finally, the 14 gauge needle and water based lubricant, used to help the needle slide through easier.
I felt him clean it off, and put the clamps on. They were just being used to hold my lip out, not to clamp it down. He told me to take a deep breath, and once I did, he slid the needle through. My mouth was a little dry, so he said it would be more painful that a Monroe normally would. I didn't have a problem with it; I knew I would be happy with the end result. He inserted the jewelry, and I sat up and looked in the mirror. This is when we all realized how big the ball was, but he didn't have any smaller ones, so I'd have to make due.
Of course, everyone gets the aftercare lecture. I was told to wash the outside with an antibacterial soap, like Dial or Softsoap. Then after I did that, I was to gargle and swish Listerine around in my mouth. It was totally worth it though. It's still a little swollen, seeing that it's only four days old.
I absolutely love my Monroe. I kind of get some weird looks every once in a while, but I'm okay with that. People constantly ask me if I just get piercings because I want to fit in. But it's because I love piercings. I have no idea why, but they are one of the things that make me truly happy. My dad didn't care at all, because with a piercing, you can take it out and let it heal, but you can't do that with a tattoo. I went into the piercing shop yesterday with a friend of mine to get her nose pierced, and I asked Josh to look at my piercing and make sure it was healing up good. He said it looked great, and the minute it was done swelling, to come and see him so that we could get a smaller stud and a smaller ball with a colored rhinestone. Feel free to email me with any questions or stories. I love hearing stories of other people piercing experiences, so tell me about them! Thankss !
