I've wanted my monroe pierced since I was 14, but my mom had said I'd have to wait until I was 16. So I waited and waited, and my birthday finally rolled around. I asked my coach (volleyball) if we could have facial piercings and she said even if it were allowed with the league, she didn't want me having one (even though she had her nose done? Stupid.). My mom said I couldn't quit in the middle of the season (no, I didn't want to quit because of this). So I had to wait until May to get it (my birthday was in March). I counted down the days until my last tournament, and already had plans made to get it done the day after.

So we had to drive back to our side of town to get it. Once we got back there, my nerves started building. Not so much nerves as excitement, I was pumped, I'd been waiting for this for a really long time. The guy at the counter said he couldn't do piercings, and that the only one that could was working on a tattoo, so there would be a short wait. While we waited, we looked through designs for tattoos and Brad finally called us back there. The woman getting the tattoo stuck around to watch, I noticed she had her monroe pierced as well. She told me it didn't hurt much, but I was still worried. I sat in the little chair thing and he asked me what side I wanted it on. He also had me wash my mouth, and then he cleaned the area twice. Before that, when he was putting gloves on, as was his "assistant", and my mom joked about how to bigger guy (the "assistant") was going to hold me down. I laughed, and was glad someone was having some humor through all this.
I've been reading stories about getting the monroe pierced, so I knew he was going to mark it first, but I still asked. He joked around and said "nope, I'm going right in!" I laughed, and he marked it. I asked to have it a little lower, but he explained that if he went any lower, the back of the labret would keep getting stuck under my tooth. I agreed with the spot he had picked, and he started preparing the needle. I don't mind needles at all, but I just couldn't look and think about how it would be going through my upper lip, he made lots of small talk, which calmed me down. I grabbed Kohan's hand as he clamped my lip and said "Don't jerk your knees, I don't want you to pop me in my junk." I laughed and then he said "On the count of three, 1..2.." and it was through after he'd barely reached 2. It only pinched a little, but that lasted 15 seconds, if that.
He handed me a mirror, and I fell in love with it. The woman watching said it looked cute on my face. While I was still admiring my new little piercing, Brad went over care instructions. After all that, I paid and left.
That night it didn't hurt at all, and it swelled very little. The next morning before school, it didn't hurt at all, but once 5th period rolled around, I was in a lot of pain. Which, I expected was normal. I took some Advil and sucked it up. The Advil helped a lot. And I've found that sucking on ice makes it feel a lot better too. So here I am, my second day of having my monroe, and I love it more than ever. I can't wait to change out the plain little ball they have in there to a diamond of some sort. Make sure you don't touch it for a few days, some kid came up and poked it and said "Did that hurt?!" I got mad and said "Now it does asshole."
If you're thinking about getting your monroe, I really recommend it. It's already given me a boost of confidence, and I've gotten a ton of compliments on it from complete strangers at the store. It adds a lot to my face and makes me feel really unique, which wasn't even the reason I wanted it to begin with. I just love it. It was well worth my two year wait, and I'm itching to get another one already, but my mom has already said no to anymore facial piercings until I'm 18.
