So about a month after getting my nose pierced (my first "real" piercing) the urge strikes again. I started looking at other types of piercings on the internet and I had stumbled across the Labret piercing. I did my research and presented the idea to my mom. She said to talk to her again after my nose was healed. It has been 6 months so I thought the time was right to bring it up again. After days and weeks of begging, She reluctantly said yes. I persuaded her by asking to go over spring break so I would have 5 days for it to heal up a bit before going back to school.

Spring break comes and I am as excited as ever. She got the minor permission form early so her friend could notarize it for her ahead of time. Since we were both off from school and work, we decided good Friday was the best day to go. So my friend Ashley came over and we headed to August Moon shortly after they opened. We walked in and I gave the receptionist the form, my ID, and my birth certificate and my mom had to give her ID too. After all the paperwork was cleared away we looked at the flash on the walls and I even saw one of my friends from school who was there to get her navel pierced. Turns out her my and my mom went to high school together.

After a couple of minutes Jenn, the piercer, called me back and told me I could bring in one person. I brought Ashley because my moms no very supportive (she cried when I got my nose pierced). I walked into the small room and she handed my a cup of Listerine and told me to rinse my mouth out. While I was doing this she started to explain the procedure and asked if I had any questions. When I was done I sat on the bench and she cleaned my lip then marked it. I decided to go with off-center slightly to the right. The placement was good and I was ready to go. She then put on the clamps (which, despite what everyone says, I could barley feel). She opened the needle and counted to 3 and it was in. Not very painful at all, it felt like a needle going through your lip. You could feel it but it was completely bearable. Then she slid in the jewelry and went to screw on the ball. As she was screwing on the ball, she had one hand in my mouth holding the jewelry straight and the other screwing the ball. I felt wet stuff dripping down my chin. Thinking it was saliva, I wiped it off. Then I realized it was a descent amount of blood. I wasn't really expecting that. But she got the ball on and then gave me more Listerine and a paper towel and told me to try to wash some of the blood off at the sink. I did this while she changed her gloves and then I sat back down and while she cleaned the outside again. She explained the aftercare process, asked for questions, and shook my hand. I went out to the receptionist to pay (don't forget to tip!!!) and showed my mom. She was ok with it but a little grossed out. The receptionist gave me the aftercare sheet and I asked for a few q-tips for the road (the bleeding wasn't going away yet). It eventually stopped (it wasn't too much though).

Overall, everything went very well. Jenn was very nice and helpful, the shop was clean and sanitary (yet a little crowded), and i will deffinately go there again someday. To me, the most dreadful part of the whole expierience was the listerine. Listerine makes my eyes water but the actual needle doesn't bother me (tell me how that works??). The swelling didn't start until later that night when I got home from my other friend's brother's gig at some coffee house. My friends were on blood patrol the whole time so i was constantly going into the bathroom to wash it off. I have been using a lot of ice to make it go down. I am also taking advil to help with the swelling. Eating is still a little awkward (Soup did not work out too well), as is smiling and talking. It's getting better though. I'm not in pain however the swelling is still here 3 days later so if it's not gone soon I'm gonna go back and see if I can get longer jewelry. It's a simple piercing with minor pain, so if you want it, go for it! Make sure you do your homework and find a reputable place. DON'T do it yourself!!
