Back in the end of July, I went on vacation to Aruba with my family and some family friends. It was the first time I have ever been there but it was the second year my parents went. The year before my dad had found a tattoo and piercing parlor and he had gotten his first tattoo. He said that if I wanted to get a tattoo the next year, I could, but I didn't want a tattoo as much as I wanted a piercing. My whole sophomore year I had been admiring piercings. I had seen the Monroe piercing before in pictures and thought it looked cool. It was unique and I like things that most people don't have. I had never seen it before "in person" until a new girl came to my school that had it. It looked awesome and I knew that I really wanted it when I actually saw it. So I went to Aruba knowing that I was going to get a Monroe piercing. I didn't actually get the piercing until the second to last day we were on the island because my sisters and my dad were getting tattooed so I waited until they were done. I was really nervous and I didn't do much research about the piercing before I got it, but I got it anyway, and a lot of my friends thought I was crazy to go and get a piercing in Aruba, but its a clean place and they cleaned the jewelery before they pierced, so theres nothing wrong with it.

Before I had my piercing done my friend got her navel pierced, she said it didn't hurt and even though I wasn't getting the same piercing, I felt better knowing her piercing didn't hurt. It calmed me down. When it was my turn I was taken into a room and the door was closed behind me, the piercer said that he was going to put a dot where I wanted the piercing to be and I could tell him I liked it or if I wanted it moved slightly. I did this and then he said he was going to clamp it and he showed me what tools he was going to use and the procedure. The needle was really thick and long and it had a hole inside of it, like a tube. I thought it would be like a regular needle, just a little thicker, but I was wrong. It might scare most people to see the tools and know the procedure but it calmed me down because I wasn't clueless about what was happening.
When everything was ready, I closed my eyes, he clamped my lip and slowly pushed the needle through, before he actually put the piercing in there was a plastic tube that was in my lip. After the tube was in, he put the actual ring in. It was painful when he pushed the needle through but it was worth it. The piercer told me to clean it with non-alcohol mouth wash and q-tips and to brush my teeth after eating anything. I did this about 3 or 4 times a day for about the first month, and I still do it now about twice a day. It hasn't been infected and it didn't really hurt after I got it. The area around my piercing was a little swollen but in a week it was gone and it hasn't hurt at all since I've had it. It took a while to get used to the back of the piercing and it still sometimes hits my tooth and scraps against my gums, but it doesn't really hurt and I still have a long bar in. I'm probably going to change to a short bar soon so this will stop happening, but I've tried to undo the ball and it's difficult. When you first get something pierced they probably screw things in tightly so they don't fall out because if they do the hole might close up, and I kept twisting it, but it wouldn't unscrew. I should probably go to a piercing parlor and buy a short bar and ask them how I should take it out and put it in because no one showed me at the place I got it done.
If you're thinking of getting a Monroe piercing then definitely go for it because if you clean it and treat it well, it comes out to be a really cute and simple piercing that's really unique. I've gotten some weird looks from people around school and people have made annoying comments to me about the piercing but its grown on a lot of people that weren't used to it and a lot of my friends like it now, and it really shouldn't matter what other people think as long as you like it.
