About a month ago, I was clicking around BME, with nothing particular in mind when I came across a piercing called a Scrumper. I've heard a few other names for it such as a smiley. Its consists of the tiny triangle of skin that connects your upper lip to the top of your gums.If you're going to pierce this make sure have an adiquit amount of flesh.
At A Glance Author Marie Contact Marie@bme.anon When A month ago Artist Me Studio School Location Girls bathroom I used a 14 gauge hollow piercing needle and with an 18 guage hoop. The hoop should be surgical steel or something that's not cheap metal. The inside of your mouth is not a fun place to have get infected, so you might as well just make sure you do it right the first time.
If you're going to pierce this I would suggest using a small needle size, such as a sixteen. Make sure it is hollow as well. This allows for the hoop to fit into the piercing much easier because it takes the flesh directly out for you.
Make sure you steralize the needle and all that good stuff Im sure you're already aware of.
I attempted to pierce it twice.
The first time I tried to hold my lip and pierce it all at the same time by myself. Yeah, that didn't go so well. With only one hand to pierce with the needle ended up crooked and stabbing me in the lip.
Yeah. I stopped after that.
The next day though at school I got a friend to hold my upper lip up for me and while I pierced it. This time went easy as pie. The needle went right through, it's completely painless (or at least it was for me). If you have trouble getting the needle through the last layer of skin it helps to push down on the tip of the needle.
My next problem happened to be that the hoop I had in was too big for my personal gum line. I left it in for two weeks then I went to the local tattoo schop (Happily Ever After) and had the piercing artist put a new hoop in for me. I personally found this expierence a little scary seeing as they went in with the forceps and pliers and what not.
But overall the hoop looked a lot better. Also as a for warning if ou decide to use a captive in your smiley piercing that tiny ass little ball will be one hell of a bitch to get in. It took me two hours (and I lost the ball 3 times) before I finally got it in. So if you're going to do it yourself make sure that the hoop you are going to use is going to be the right size. Its not a great expierence to have to leave an ugly too big hoop in for two weeks and then go through the fun of having a still relativly fresh piercing poked at with a forceps.
I found that after I got it done it took some time to get used to, it constantly felt like I had food stuck in my upper lip (which does happen sometimes by the way, that's real fun). But now I cant even tell its there. I constantly forget about it until someone asks me "Hey do you have something pierced up there"
Over all though its a relativly easy piercing to hide if you above the right sized jewelry and what not. Its amazing how few people know what it is too. Its a good piercing if you want something that no one else around home has. Of course then other people all see it and want one -_- which is exaclty what happened to me. A week after I got mine four other people had theirs done. Also Ive had several people ask me if I in fact invented it. Right. I wish I was that cool.
The healing process was easy enough. I cleaned it using salt water and hydrogen peroxide (not together mind you). It was a painless healin process and the over all result it fantastic.
Anyways
It takes some getting used to but with the right sized hoop and care it turned out to be a really cute piercing.
I suppose one bad side affect would be the fact that it wears down on your gums pretty bad, this also depends on where the hoop is located (depending on the size of the hoop). After about a week I noticed the gums at the top inbetween space of my two front teeth had worn away in to a pocket. Im pretty sure the gums generally grow back so I would say its nothing to wory about.
Definantly my new favorite piercing ever.
Ive even gone as far as to name it Scrumpy.
And my apolijies for this being so long and stupid and rambly.
