So there I was in class, getting inspiration from bmezine.com, I came across the category "smilies", the piercing of that little bit of skin above your top front teeth. I though it was really cool and would be easy to hide from teachers at school. I saw a lot of picks of girls who had them but I thought it would be cool as its something different. I had at the time been contemplating piercing my lip but that would take to much time to heal and teachers and parents would see it, which is something I don't want as I go to a private school. I read up on the nerves for my lip and also the dangers of having a lip ring rubbing against your gum and teeth and the damage it can cause.

On the way home from school, I was on the bus talking to a friend who is into DIY peircings, about the possibilities of me doing it, and if it would look good. She said it would be a stupid idea, but the point of it being hidden added a layer of confidence. When I came home I saw that no one was there, so I had a bit of time before my mum came home from work. I cleaned the bathroom counter and open a fresh 14g piercing needle, yes 14g! it's the only needle I had, crazy yes but I had no other choice and I was in the moment!

I walked over to the vanity and I looked into the mirror, and ask myself... how hard could this really be, will the be painful? so I put the needle against the skin and slowly pushed it, I got to the other side and I let the tip of the needle come out. It went it easier than I thought.

As I was pushing the needle through, I heard my mothers car pull up into the drive way! So I pulled it out, and I went out and said hello and went back into the bathroom and closed the door so it would look like im doing something personal. She passed the door and asked if I was showering, and I go "yeah mum", which was a total lie. I had some blood in my mouth and I thought I might as well go for a shower to make it not look like I was doing anything weird, and that the hot water might keep it open.

I got out of the shower and toweled down, I went over to the clean vanity and I pushed the needle back into the previous hole I had made, like all piercings, I think the exit and entrance hurt the most, so it hurt a bit but I got the tip out of the exit, I didn't want to split the piece of skin so I didn't push the whole needle through. I pulled the needle out and then the blood come out, so I spat it out and washed my mouth out with some mouthwash to kill any germs. The mouth wash didn't sting which was good, so I can hope that it does kill some germs.

I then went and got a 14g bar and ball and threaded the ball on, I then put the bar through the bit of skin and then tried to get the other ball on but it didn't work because of the saliva. I went out and spoke to my mum and then had an idea, to use a syringe and blue tack / prestick to hold the ball on the opening of the syringe as its hard to hold your lip up and screw on a small ball.

My plan worked a charm and I got it on the second go! I don't do drugs but I keep a syringe (with out the needle) in my "piercing box" just incase, and today it proved its purpose.

As far as pain go it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would, and the skin is soft which helped. It was a spur of the moment thing I guess, but it isn't hurting at the moment and hopefully in the next holidays I can do my lip.

Im happy I did it and it looks good. Thanks for reading and remember, be careful and make sure you are clean if you choose to do your own piercing, infections suck and can make the experience much worse. Don't copy what I have said I am not a professional peircer. I did this piercing because Im too much of a bum to pay for someone to do it for me, which is pretty stupid as I risk infection especially in the mouth (laughing out loud). Be careful and take care.
