I had always liked the look of lowbrets rather than a single lip ring or labret, which I had at the time. Having thought about it quite a lot I knew I wanted them, but I didn't know when I would next have the money or the time. Fast forward a couple months, my mother told me what she and my father I were getting for my 18th birthday: money. With that money I'd get tattooed and pierced, and why the hell not.

A couple weeks before my birthday I went in and talked to both my tattoo artist and Matt about what I wanted. Saturday seemed to come faster then I was expecting. Before I knew it I was at Planet Ink being tattooed. Then plan was to get pierced right after I was finished being tattooed, but due to a friend of mine have to work I waited until about 2pm. We went back to the shop and I told matt I was ready.

Quite surprisingly I wasn't as nervous as I had been just about every other time I had been pierced. I think maybe my nerves were completely worn out earlier in the day from being tattooed. Of course everything is perfectly sterilized and clean and ready to go. He cleaned around my lip then marked. The first place he marked on my lip I wasn't happy with since they were too close to my existing labret, that I would later remove, and too high. I had Matt remark where I thought they should. Perfect, not as low as I first thought but when I saw the marks I thought they would be great right there. He clamped the left side first. Which felt really strange since they were so close to the bottom of my gums. Needle through; felt great. It's then I realized I was actually getting two not just one. I'd never had more then one piercing done in one day let alone two in one session. Here we go with number two. Same deal, clamps and pierce. It felt the exact same way the first one did. I d on't know what I was expecting, but I thought the second would feel different then the first. Everything is in and done and I was terribly excited to look. My friend Lindsey, Matt and the apprentice Courtney all kept saying they looked awesome, but I had to sit there another minute while Matt observed and made sure they were exact. Again, I didn't really know what to expect when I looked in the mirror, They were prefect! The right side was a bit more swollen then the left so it looked a little awkward right away but they were great.

It's always weird the first time you have something new in your mouth. Like braces, or a tongue piercing, or lip piercings. You can feel them sitting there rubbing against your lip or gums, trying to place themselves in a comfortable spot. Not long after have them done I took out my middle labret. It had been my intention to take it out even though others said it looked fine I didn't like it. When I want I still can put it back in, but for the most part I leave it out.

That night I had a jazz band concert I had to play baritone saxophone in that I had almost forgot about. When I got there my music teacher got quite the kick out of my new "antennas" as he called them. He was quick to ask whether I'd still be able to play or not. I told him "we'll see I guess". Everything turned out fine. They caught on my gums a little but nothing I couldn't handle for half an hour.

The next day I had another jazz band concert to play in. this time it was a little different since they had time to swell completely and get nice and pink so everyone could think they were terribly infected. Which they were not and still are not. Later that day I had to go and help train some horse at the stable I ride at. I was working one of the horses and clicking and kissing at the him to move him on (I suppose that's something only horse people would understand) was really weird since these two new bars were, well, in the way now. It turns out that at some point during the day I had lost the bead for the right side, which was the side that stayed a little more swollen. I went home, cleaned up and called matt asking him if it was cool that I come in and have another bead put on. On my trip to the shop I managed to pull the bar back through the hole, really irritating it. Since then the right side has always been a little more angry then the left, but with good reason. It has only been less then a month since I've had my lowbrets done but they seemed to have settled in nicely with no problems since the second day.
