I had been wanting to do something a little bit more original with my lip. I used to have a labret but I had to take it out due to the fact that everyone has it and also because it was starting to cause my gums to recede and it was becoming very painful.

I was looking at pictures and experiences and I decided that I wanted to get the vertical labret because of the fact it has the same look as the other labret just a little bit different. And I have noticed that not many people, at least in my area, do not have this piercing.
I came into Loops & Pierces in Santa Rosa. I have been getting pierced there for a while now by Neal. He has a lot of experience as a piercer and knows what he is doing. He has pierced me a few times before. He has pierced my double nostrils, inner labia, and has gauged my ears. So anyways, I tell him I would like to get a vertical labret and he thought that it would look great on me and was a great idea.
So I filled out my paper work and showed them my identification. Then we picked out my jewelry. We decided on a 14g 1 inch long barbell due to the larger size of my lower lip. He likes to put larger jewelry in at first to allow for some swelling. He said I can come back in two weeks to get the jewelry changed. I then payed and he told me to come on back.
We go into his "exam" room. He has music playing and the room is sort of like a room you would see at a doctors office. I sit down on the exam table and wait as he washes his hands and puts his gloves on. He then begins to make marks on my lip to figure out where we want to place the barbell. He kept showing me in the mirror so I can tell him what I thought. My lips are a little bit crooked so it took a while to get it perfectly centered. Finally we agree on the position and are ready to pierce. I had asked him if the pain was going to be similar to my other labret. He told me it would be about the same.
So he clamps my lip very gently making sure it is lined up with the marks that he had made. At this time I closed my eyes because any time I get pierced I enjoy the experience much better with my eyes closed. It helps me relax more. He then has me start to take deep breaths. And on the third breath as I was blowing out he pushed the needle through. He is so gentle with the process that it was not that extremely painful. I mean don't get me wrong it does hurt and it did hurt more then my other labret. But overall it wasn't that bad. He just has a way of piercing that makes the experience better.
He then puts the jewelry through and removes the clamp. I was a little light headed afterwards which is normal for me after I get pierced. It happens every time, so I just laid down on the exam table and he gave me a candy to suck on. I stayed for a few minutes until I felt better we then sat and talked for a few minutes. Then when I was ready to leave I tipped him and was on my way. As I was leaving he asked me if I even looked in the mirror. I completely forgot to look at my new beautiful lip. I was too busy talking to him. So we went back into the room and I looked at it. I loved it. It looked a little long but I knew I was going to be coming back in a couple weeks to change the jewelry.
The overall experience was wonderful. I love this new addition to my body. I highly recommend getting this piercing if you like the labret but don't like your gums in pain and if your in my area I highly recommend going to see Neal. He is a great piercer and knows what he is doing.
It has been about three weeks since I got pierced and it is healing wonderfully. I wash it with antibacterial soap once in the morning and I do a salt soak at night. I am going back this week to have him change the jewelry to a more fitting size.
Now I need to decide what my next piercing will be. Looks like I have more research to do. Well, I hope this experience was helpful and happy piercing.
