I like bridge piercings. Along with eyebrows and centre labrets, bridges never seem to look bad on people to me. If they're healed and pierced correctly, they suit all types of faces and people, in my eyes. To some people that might make them generic or over done or whatever, but I think they look good, and that's why I got mine pierced. Also, I love symmetry in my piercings, and since this is a centre face piercing - kaching! Seemed like a cool piercing to put on my to-do list.

But I never actually set a date or some money aside to actually go get it done. In fact when I walked into Fox Studios on Smith Street with my boy James, I intended on getting my nipples pierced as my first piercing in my new city. I talked to Jane the apprentice piercer about it, and explained that I still had a bit of the flu. She told me that nipples are difficult to heal and can take 6 months or so to completely heal. So I decided to leave that for another time, when I'm completely healthy, and get something else stabbed instead. And bridge was the first thing that popped into my head!

So I went into the piercing room with Jane, and made James come to hold my hand. Jane told me it was her first time to pierce someone's bridge, and told me about how bridges can migrate, so my piercing may not be permanent. I knew about this before hand, but I decided it'd still be worth it. Even if it doesn't last forever, it's still a piercing I really like, and so I decided it would be worth it anyway. She then explained that it would take quite a while to get it lined up, because if one side is slightly lower or higher than the other it can look really really weird. We went through all the usual cleaning aftercare things, and she showed me the needles etc all clean and in their packaging. Then I moved up the bed so I was facing the mirror, and Jane began the process of staring at my face.

This took about 10 or 15 minutes. Jane stared at my bridge and I stared at all her different facial piercings one by one. Each time she made two marks, she'd stare at them, I'd stare in the mirror at them, James would stare at them, and then we'd decide if they were straight or not. Finally we decided that we'd finally got it right, and I lay down on the bed. Jane told me that I had a good amount of skin for a bridge piercing, and that meant I had a better chance of it healing and lasting a longer time. Jane put the clamp on my bridge and said that this was probably the most uncomfortable part of the piercing. It took her a minute or so to get it clamped in the right place, and then she said she was ready to pierce me.

I took a deep breath, and as I exhaled she pierced my bridge. And a few seconds later, Jane reminded me to keep breathing. I always forget that part. I could hardly feel the needle, the worst part was the clamp pinching really tightly on my skin. It took a few seconds to get all the way through. Once she'd put the jewellery in and the clamp was gone, my bridge and the area around it was pleasantly numb and I was full of endorphins and happy as a janey in a candy store. I kept lying down for a bit, waiting for my head to stop buzzing loudly in my ears and spinning. Then I sat up and looked in the mirror, and I had a really wicked looking bridge with a big silver barbell through it.

We went out and paid, and Jane gave me the leaflet on after care, in case I forgot anything. We made a note to buy some sea salt that day, and went off on our merry candy eating way. It's now a week later, and healing fine. The skin around the bridge bruised a bit, and now it's just a pale yellow that you can hardly see. It bled a few times after I knocked it in the night, and so in the morning it was a little sore as I washed off the blood. I also had a headache or two that seemed to be around the bridge area. But now it's not sore and I just have to clean the crusties off in the morning and at night. And everyone keeps telling me it really suits me.

To anyone else in Melbourne I recommend Jane as an excellent piercer. Support your apprentice piercers: experience is the best way for them to learn to be even better piercers.
