Almost a year ago, I was really into the whole piercing scene. I still am, but I tend to like less mainstream piercings nowadays.

Quick note, make sure you go to a half decent shop.
I had always liked the look of septum piercings, and a year ago, they weren't nearly as popular as they are now. I thought it'd make me stand out a little since I only knew of one or two other local people with it done.
My friend wanted to get snakebites done that day, so I went with him. At the time, I was just thinking about getting my septum pierced, but I wasn't completely sure. One turn off was that the guy at the front desk had it done, and when I had told him I wanted it done, he told me it was the most painful. That scared me a lot because this guy wasn't small, and didn't seem to be joking.
After my friend had his piercings over with, they asked me if I was still interested in piercing my septum. I had enough money and I even had my own jewelery with me (lowers the cost), so I said sure, why not. It was a spur of the moment kind of thing, but I'd rather it be that than planned out because I would think my nerves would get to me if I had come here planning on getting it done.
I gave the guy my jewelery and he went to sterilize it. When he came back, I followed him to the chair and got ready to squeeze the sides of it. I had read up on bme and there were some people saying it was hardly painful, and others saying it was the most pain they'd ever felt. My theory is that all piercings will hurt, duh, but atleast it doesn't last for long.
The standard cleaning, and gloves and such. I tilted my chin up and he started feeling around inside of my nose. That had to be the weirdest thing ever, but he said he was feeling for my "sweet spot". Once it was found, he marked it off. I hadn't eaten much that day, and that was a bad move on my part, but I didn't think about it at the time. With my chin back and the cold needle to one side of my nose, I took a deep breath and away he went. The needle went through quicker than I imagined, and really wasn't that bad. My eyes didn't even water. To be honest, my root canal hurt WAY more than getting this pierced. I thought all was great and he put the jewelery in and then the problem.. it was insanely crooked. I don't know how he could have gone so wrong, but he told me he couldn't let me go like that and insisted i take it out. I'm glad he told me though, and I got him to take it out right then and there. He offered to try it again now or I could come back and do it. I was so pumped up already, I replied "just do it now" and closed my eyes again. I don't think this was the right thing to do, but I had no idea. I'm sure it was a hell of a lot easier than trying to go through scar tissue. I put my head back one more time and in the needle went. It was straight this time, but it also hurt more. There was even blood on my cheek that must have come from it. I think that's when the whole not eating thing really got to me, because my head started to feel really light and my face went pale. Oh well, I was just happy it was done and over with.
Now that I think about it, it really couldn't have hurt as much as I was told because I had the courage to do it twice in a row. That definitely earned me brownie points with the big guy at the front desk.
Cleaning it was pretty easy, which was good, because I'm not much of a cleaner (haha?). I was told to put episome salt in some warm water and soak my nose in it for a few minutes. It's hard because you have to try and not breathe through your nose sine it's fully submerged in the water. I eventually gave up on that and just used hydrogen peroxide. Shame on me, but mine healed just fine.
As of this September, I'll have had my septum for a year. I still love it, but it has also gotten a lot more popular and I'll probably take it out eventually. I've thought of stretching it a tiny bit so atleast it'd be a little different, but I've heard that hurts like a bitch. Pain stories didn't stop me the first time though, so who knows, maybe I'll try it.
One major thing I would recommend is that you eat first. After walking away from the shop with my new septum piercing, I felt really sick and I had to find a place to sit.
