I decided to get this one done on a bit of a whim one evening when I was round my boyfriend's house. I wanted to go the next day but due to him working he would not be able to come with me, and I wanted the moral support. So I decided to wait for a 5 days till Friday when he would be able to tag along. Although 5 days is not a long time it felt like forever waiting, I can get very impatient about things like this. The waiting just made it worse, reading stories on here and other sites it made me more apprehensive and nervous. There were so many conflicting views on the pain aspect of the piercing and how the procedure was carried out, i.e. with or without clamps etc. My boyfriend assured me it was nothing and I'd be fine.

Until the piercing heals and I am able to freely change my jewellery I wanted a retainer putting in so I can conceal it. So I decided to buy one before hand to take with me just in case the studio did not have any. I brought a 1.6mm clear monofilament retainer (from a very good website and reasonable prices), which looked so tiny when it arrived in the post the next day, that was just as well because I only have a small button nose.

Friday arrived and I was becoming more apprehensive. I did not really pick the best day to get pierced as I was busy moving out of my flat and tying up loose ends. So I walked over the road from my flat to Modern Body Art. This as most people know in the body modification industry is a very reputable place. They are always so friendly and welcoming, and the place is very clean and nice looking. I was greeted by the receptionist/piercer Matt, who said it should be no problem in getting my septum pierced. I filled in the forms and went into the back piercing room. I was very nervous by this point and chatting complete rubbish at my boyfriend, who was being very understanding and trying to put my nerves at rest.

I sat on the bench and told the piercer that I was a bit nervous about this one, and he was very nice about it and said that most people were about getting their septum done. As it looks like a very full on piercing and you assume it is going through cartilage like the nostril. As he was setting up all the different bits he got out another retainer yet a metal one, and it looked so huge compared to mine. I was given a tissue soaked in anesthetic which I sat with, jamming it up my nose, it worked except it also made my top lip numb as I did not realise the tissue was also resting on that. It stung a bit but nothing too uncomfortable.

After a few minutes I tipped my head back and closed my eyes. I felt the clamps rest on the middle of my nose, but they did not feel tightened at all. They are usually the worst bit of all piercings and I hate them with a passion. I sat there waiting for him to tighten them up. Then I felt pressure on my nose assuming he was fiddling with the clamps, but actually I found out he was trying to push the needle through with quite a force and had to re-adjust it. Then I felt a little sting and my eyes just streamed instantly, I could feel the needle in my nose, which was uncomfortable but not unbearable. Then he took out the needle and trimmed the tubing either side of my nose. Apparently I'd gone quite pale and I did feel a little dizzy, but I think that's because of the thought of a needle, I do the same when I give blood and with any piercing and tattoo. He managed to get my tiny retainer in and flipped it up no problem. There was a tiny bit of blood when he tried to re-position the needle, which was cleaned up, but it felt strange getting a piercing and then not being able to look at it straight away.

I sat for a bit re-gained my composure and colour, and paid my £25 and sat outside in the fresh air for a bit, felt fine after 5 minutes and went shopping.

You really can't see it at all, the only time you can is if you look up my nose at a very sharp angle. As my retainer is a clear plastic it goes even more un-noticed. Can't wait for it to be healed so I can but in a circular barbell.

I recommend anyone to get this done, and it really does not hurt at all.
