It all started when I attended a Ballydowse (Celtic Oi band) concert a couple years ago. I was intrigued by two of the band members who sported wart hog tusks thru their septums. I remember thinking how it reminded me of a caveman or some tribe I saw in a national geographic magazine. Ever since then, I have fantasized about being able to wear a tusk thru my septum as well. I knew a few people with small gauge septum rings, and they all told me that it was a very painful piercing. I don't have much pain tolerance, so that was enough to scare me away from the idea. I put it in the back of my mind for a while until it recently resurfaced by my friend Wendy. She had mentioned to me how she thought that a little septum ring was very attractive on girls, and how she was considering getting it done herself. Then I told her about my fantasy. We began discussing how we should go in and get it done together. I figured if she had the guts to do it, then I might as well go for it. I shouldn't let a little pain get in the way of self-fufillment. So we agreed to get our septums pierced together.

She agreed that it was a good idea, so after we got back to Michigan we stopped in the town of St. Johns at a little shop were our friend Raul had been an apprentice at. Me and Wendy had both been to Tim (the artist there) before, so we were both pretty comfortable. We just walked in and filled out forms and discussed jewelry options while Tim finished a Tattoo. Wendy chose a 14 gauge cbr and I choose a 12 gauge retainer.
When our time came, we went to the piercing room and Tim discussed the procedure with us. When he asked who wanted to be first, Wendy jumped up on the chair. I watched as he found the "sweet spot" and got the needle and receiving tube ready. At the count of 3 he pushed the needle thru. It looked like a shock went thru her body and tears came to her eye. It scared me a lot, but I knew there was no turning back. Tim put the captive bead ring in and gave Wendy a mirror to look at. A big smile went across her face, and she turned and looked at me and said, "Hey! That wasn't bad at all!" She explained to me that the tears weren't from the pain. Then my turn came. I sat on the chair and Tim began to feel around on the inside of my nose. He got the needle and receiving tube ready. He told me to let him know when I was ready. Wendy gave me her hand to hold on to, which gave me a little extra comfort. I told Tim I was ready and he pushed the needle through. I felt pain, but definetly not what I was bracing myself for. He then put in my retainer and gave me a mirror. I loved what I saw, and I couldn't believe that I finally got my septum pierced! Tim showed my how to flip my the retainer up and then took us both out and talk to us about healing procedures. We paid him and I tipped him for the both of us. We then went on our merry way. Four weeks later I decided I was sick of flipping the retainer up and put in a 10 gauge barbell that I had come across. It went in with out much trouble. Since then I have stretched up to 8ga and I am going to leave it a couple weeks before attempt to put in a nice little 6ga cbr I bought. I think 6ga is as big as I'm going to stretch. I don't have very large nostrils.
In the meantime, I am having my friend Ryan carve a curved tusk for me out of deer antler. I am very excited that very soon I will finally have a big fantasy of mine fufilled. So in conclusion, I love my septum piercing. I guess if you want one, I would say go for it. The pain for me wasn't very bad, but I'm sure its different for every person. Also, doing it together was a unifying experience for Wendy and myself, so go in with a friend for an extra special experience. And I guess that would be all I have to say about septum piercings and my experience with mine thus far.
