When my eighteenth birthday came around, I decided that I would very much so like to get a piercing, I was so excited, because I had always wanted to be covered in tattoos and piercings ever since I was about 13. But even with five years of thinking about piercings, it was hard to decide what to get. I was torn between my tongue, or a vertical lebret. When the day of my birthday was finally here, I decided to go with my tongue, for work related reasons. But I had a little bit of a problem... I couldn't find my state issued drivers license, my car had eaten it!

I was obviously upset, but relieved that they were being such professionals, and sticking to the books. So that day, I paid for my fiance' to have his lip pierced instead (vertical labret, very sexy if I must say so myself!).
A few weeks later(March 6th to be exact), on my fiance's nineteenth birthday, I had my temporary state issued drivers license ready, along with my birth certificate, and the picture ID from Amarillo College again. I went to a shop called Lucky Thirteen on tenth street, because the piercer working there had told me the last time that I was there, that it would only be twenty dollars for the piercing and jewelry and everything. So, after debating in his head, he approved of my state issued temporary ID, and we got down to business. My fiance' paid for it this time... (I paid for his piercing on my birthday, and he paid for mine on his birthday).
Casey, the piercer was very professional like, but also he was very quiet and awkward. He acted like he really just didn't want to be there. He had me rinse my mouth out with some antiseptic mouthwash that made my mouth all numb for a moment or two, and then marked and clamped my tongue. He then instructed me to stick my tongue out as far as I possible, and then let it relax. When he clamped my tongue he examined the top and the bottom very thoroughly, and went back to the counter to grab the needle. To my surprise, when he began to line up the needle with the marks, he turned my tongue up vertically to pierce it... I wasn't sure if that was right or not, but I'd never witnessed a tongue piercing, so I said nothing. When he pierced my tongue, I didn't feel it at all. And I was very happy with the results. During this whole procedure, he didn't say a word other than "don't spit until I tell you too" and "relax your tongue". I gave him twenty dollars and asked him how much more for the jewelry, and he said it's included in the twenty dollars.
I went through the rest of that day with absolutely no problems what so ever. I could talk and drink normally for at least four hours... before my tongue swelled. My god... my tongue swelled up to the size of my mouth and was so sore it made my eyes water. I tried to eat some chicken at chick-fil-a about five hours after I had gotten my tongue pierced, and I had to take little itty bitty tiny bites, so I didn't bite down on the ring, which I found out very quickly hurts very much.
I rinsed my mouth with alcohol free mouthwash every four hours for five days, and within three days the swelling almost was gone. Within about week (against his instructions) I was able to take the long bar out of my tongue (witch was very annoying and kept getting in the way whenever I'd talk or eat) and replace it with a short bar (which solved all the previous problems). And now, three months later, it's fine and I don't really ever notice it much, unless it clicks against my teeth. And if my teeth start showing the least bit of sensitivity, I put in a bar with plastic balls for a few days.
I haven't regretted this experience in the least, or the piercing (I love it. It improved my confidence and my fiance' and I's intimate life), and plan to get many more in the future. I'm wanting my nose done, a sternum bar piercing, and maybe even a piercing below the belt... but I'm not so sure about that yet... lol.
Peace and Love!
Blessings!
