I have been in love with the idea of body piercing, tattoo's, and all types of body mod for as long as I can remember. I have 5 ear piercings, and 2 piercings in my navel. But the one that I am the most proud of is my tongue-web. Why am I the most proud of this piercing? Because I did it all by myself.

I first got the idea for this piercing when I was 14. I was at church camp, and an older girl from my church was a counselor there, and I thought she was just the ultimate shit because she had her navel pierced (I did not have mine pierced at the time, and it would be almost 2 years before I would have mine pierced) and I hung out with her all the time. One day we were headed to dinner at their dining hall, and we were just casually talking, and I saw her playing with something in her mouth. I thought she had her tongue pierced, so I started flipping out, because a tongue piercing would have REALLY been the ultimate shit. But I tried to be all casual, and was like, oh, you have your tongue pierced? And her reply was "oh shit. please don't say anything to my dad about this." and I was like," oh well, what is it?" and she told me that she had gone with a friend to get her nose pierced, and the piercer had talked her into getting something pierced, but she couldn't get anything her dad would see, so she got her tongue-web pierced.
Well here's the funny story. My parents are also not fan's of piercing, so a piercing that they could not see was the most brilliant thing that I had ever heard of. So I started planning in my head what I would need, but let me just say that I did not plan very well at all.
*NOTE-what I did was not safe, sterile, fun, easy, or painless. I do not recommend that anyone try this by themselves. I am lucky, but it could have turned out to be a very aesthetically unpleasing sight.
I first had to collect all my supplies. I did not do a good job at this at all, because my jewelry was an ear piercing stud, and my needle was a safety pin. I know this was the start to a very bad story, but I was only 14.
So the first day I decided to try and pierce my tongue web, I locked myself in my bathroom, armed with ice and mouthwash. I did my best to sterilize my equipment and rinsed my mouth out with mouthwash. I also began to eat ice because I am a wimp for pain, and I wanted this to be as pain-free as possible. So day 1, I get the needle half way through, and chicken out. Okay, better luck next time.
Day 2-I get the needle through. Goal 1 accomplished. So I am sitting there with a safety pin hanging out of my mouth. I decided to put the earring in, and with much shoving, force, and blood, I get it through (the problem was that the safety pin was close to the equivalent of an 18 g, and the earring was a 16g. NOT A SMART PLAN).
I had a soccer game the next morning, and my tongue was really sore, so I wimped out and decided to take it out.
So I forgot the idea for a few months, and just ignored my urges to get anything pierced. But the next fall I started high school, and I met up with my old friend, Amy. I mentioned to her that I wanted to pierce my tongue web, and she went to Hot Topic and bout some 18g eyebrow barbells, which were a good size to fit in my mouth. So the next weekend she gave me one that had little blue balls with sparkles on them. I was really excited, so I waited for my mom to leave on errands before I began the sterilization process again. Also, this time, I had a larger needle, from a sewing kit (still NOT a smart idea) but it was much sharper, so it was able to slip through quite a bit easier. Getting the barbell in was another story, because I couldn't figure out how to get both my hands inside my mouth at the same time. I finally figured out that I could kind of bite the end of the barbell between my teeth and screw on the ball. I still have my tongue web pierced to this day, although my mom does know about it, she has never gotten too angry. I love the shock I give people when they find out that I have my tongue web pierced. I love my piercing, and I would recommend anybody that is a wimp for pain get it done, because it really did not hurt at all except for being a little sore.
