One sunny morning in August last year I decided I wanted more piercings, I'd wanted my tongue pierced since I was very young, and, having had my labrette and lip pierced a few years earlier I thought this day would be a good day to go and get it done.

So, my friend Zoë and I skipped along to Barrow. Barrow is about twenty minutes away from where I live. The piercing shop was closed due to some family crisis and I was terribly upset so Zoë and I decided we'd hop on the train to Lancaster and get it done there.

As we didn't know Lancaster that well we wandered around for a while staring into shop windows and prancing through the street. We met a lovely lady in a shop full of pink stuff with a labrette piercing, as she was the first person we had seen with a piercing we asked her were I should go to get my tongue pierced.

She said that she didn't know of many places and the only one she had found was a little gift shop own by a middle-aged married couple that sold glass swans and glittery watches.

We were a bit wary of it because the piercer didn't even have his ears done let alone anything else. (Although I really wouldn't have wanted to know if he had anything under his pants).

We filled some paper work out about liability or something, they can't be held responsible because it is my choice, and they asked me for I.D. because I looked about twelve. I was only seventeen at the time but they let me off because we'd traveled and I had facial piercing.

The place was very clean and private. It was upstairs in a small room with two doctors beds covered with paper towels and a sheet. He changed his gloves in front of me and took his clamps out of a sealed bag. I watched him change the needle and sterilize the bar. He explained the process, where it would be, how big the bar is and what to do afterward. He put a bib on my neck and when I asked what it was for he just laughed and said "you'll find out" .I was giggling a lot because I was nervous; he checked my tongue to make sure I could get it done and then sprayed anesthetic on it until I was dribbling into my bib. *Glamorous!*

He then quickly pierced my tongue and it was over before I knew it. The only awkward bit was trying to keep my tongue out while the needle was in it, it's a natural reaction to want to bring your tongue back into your mouth, when the bar was in I couldn't stick my tongue out for his to tighten it because my tongue was numb.

The first thing I did was by mouthwash and a milkshake, I couldn't believe I'd got my tongue pierced and was so excited I kept showing everyone, which you really shouldn't do. That night I went out and Zoë and I sat sticking ice in our mouths and giggling oh what fun!I had a lisp for days though.

It didn't swell to bad unless I'd been drinking the night before, but everyone's tongue feels like shit the morning after a heavy night out. I took pleasure in looking after my poor tongue and giving myself ice-cream treats and hot chocolate.

The second time though was a little different. I'd been putting off getting another done for a while due to lack of funds and when I had the money I went to Barrow and sat in the chair, quite confident that all would be well.

When the woman sprayed my tongue I noticed it wasn't numb on top which was disconcerting so I told her. She checked my tongue with a needle underneath and laughed at me because I really couldn't feel it. She then pierced it quickly and professionally but the top wasn't numb so I got a sharp pain, which was made worse by the fact that I really wasn't expecting it.

The next few days I was in so much pain through it and it swelled up larger and for longer, I couldn't even eat soup with bits in! When it finally went down I went and got the woman to change the bars for me because they were catching each other underneath. Which was painful, and, I was told that If I left the larger bars in they would catch and rip, which wasn't too nice a thought really.

It was so nice when I finally got smaller bars in; I had had larger ones in since last August so it was quite a change. And now I get to kiss beautiful people with my lovely double tongue piercing. The only thing I could say would be a thing to think about is that I have a permanent lisp now because of my oral piercing, but I don't mind, its kind of cute.
