Well it was my 18th birthday & my lovely boyfriend decided that he'd make my dream come true & pay for me to have my tongue pierced. My friend Natalie had recently had hers done, I couldn't wait to catch up!

By the time we got there to be honest I was terrified. I only had 8 holes in my ears & belly button done & that really did put me through a lot of pain so i was not looking forward to another piercing. Still i confidently thought to myself, where there's pleasure there's pain.
It reached 1pm & my name was called, up the stairs i was led. The room was spacious & very clean. The piercer instructed me to sit down on a bed & placed two pieces of a numbing agent on the top & bottom of my tongue. Whilst we were waiting for those to settle in I read the aftercare sheet he gave me. I convinced myself that the piercing itself wasn't going to hurt at all as my tongue was already numb. Chewing on it I could hardly feel anything, so why would it hurt when it was being pierced? It wouldn't. But oh my was I wrong.
J.p removed the two pieces of gauze with the anesthetic on from out of my mouth & drew a dot on my tongue to show me where the bar was going to be placed. Once I agreed that was in the correct spot he asked me to stick out my tongue. Then he clamped it! Not a proper clamp that say you have in science, it was a hand held one. It was then I realised that maybe this was going to put me in a little pain, as I could already feel the pressure of the clamp. Before I knew it there was a huge transparent plastic needle heading towards my mouth. I closed my eyes tightly only to feel a terribly painful prick. Clasping hold of the bed I wept out & grabbed on to the side hoping it would cancel out some of the pain, only to have him respond that I was being silly! I felt the needle go all the way through & make a "popping" noise as it came out of the other side. I remember opening my eyes & looking over at my boyfriend. He looked totally horrified. It was only when he realised that I was watching his reaction did he try & pull a "It will be ok" grin at me. Not at all convincing I must admit!
Thankfully it was over & done with relatively quickly. 20 seconds maximum if you include entering the jewelery, especially as I was not at my most co-operative!
I looked in the mirror to see my new piercing & felt very chuffed with myself. The swelling hadn't even started at that point so off we went shopping. The next day i was in agony. Sadly I was on my way to a playoff football match of division one at the Millennium stadium in Cardiff!
My tongue had swelled to about double its' size. I couldn't say simple words like "You" & "Why" It actually took a whole 10 days until it was almost back to its' normal self. But I was relieved & amazed by how quickly it did heal. Before I knew it I was back on my Big Mac's & had a much shorter bar in (Which is SO much more comfortable, you'll notice straight away)
The after care really is important though. Your mouth is the fastest healing part of your body but getting an infection in it would not be pretty. I had to use an anti-bacterial mouth wash 2-3 times a day & every time after I had ate until the swelling had gone down. Also a lozenge that you can get from health shops worked wonders, it was called Proplis.
I do love my tongue piercing & my boyfriend has most surely loved it! It's also wonderful how you can get all sorts of balls. Especially the U.V balls for when you go out clubbing, they are a MUST! It's like a glowing light in your mouth. But don't risk drinking alcohol until the swelling has drastically reduced. I mean please give yourself at least a week or two. I made the mistake of going against that & as it makes you dehydrated your tongue only swells up more & again your in so much more pain than what you would be have you stayed clear.
It really is a great piercing & if your thinking about it then go get it done. It Heals quickly, it's very usefull (For your man that is!) & looks great. Just follow the advice people give you & you wont have a problem. I hope my story hasn't put you off. I'm sure it's different for different people. Most of my friends said that they could hardly feel a thing. re-assuringly since then i've almost become addicted to having piercings done. I always had a thing for my ears but after my tongue I thought I can do anything now. So the nipples & nose have now been decorated & this tuesday i'm booked in for a horizontal clitoral hood piercing. That one is purely a little treat to myself :)
