I had just turned 18yrs old and went straight to the tattoo/piercing studio that I had been hearing great things about. I went in knowing exactly what I wanted. A tongue piercing. I started talking to the guy ("Vik") that was behind the counter about anything that I could think of to ask. i.e. "how bad does it hurt"?, "will I swell as bad as my friends"? etc. We went over everything for about 15 or 20 minutes. Then I said "I am going to do it". So he gave me the clip board with all the standard paperwork to fill out and sign. While I am doing this, he went off to his room and got everything ready and sterilized.

Then he comes out, takes the papers and checks my I.D and said "ready"? I followed him to the back and sat down in the chair and he put a papertowel like bib on me like you would get in the dentist office. He begins to show me everything and explain the sterilization process and that this is the first and last time that the lance will be used.
By this time I have a smile on my face that I can't make go away due to my excitement. He then gives me a small dixie cup with mouth wash in it and tells me to go to the bathroom and rinse. I do and go back and sit in the chair. He asks me to open my mouth and stick my tongue out. He then marks my tongue with some sort of ink and makes a few lines and gives me a mirror and asks me where I want it. I pick a line that he made and he then puts a clamp on and looks under my tongue to make sure there are no veins in the way. I look over and see the lance coming straight for my tongue.
He says "take a deep breath and exhale slowly". As I exhale the needle goes through and I don't even realize that it's over. Well the first half anyway. Then he put the barbell in and screwed the end on and gave me the mirror to look at my new tongue. I loved it!! He gave me a sheet that explained how to take care of it and I left.
I went went straight to the store to buy mouth wash and still had no pain. The only problem that I came across was trying to eat. That was an experience all in itself. I would feel a little pain while I attempted to eat, but just soreness really. The only other time that I can remember that I felt pain was when I would brush my teeth and tongue. For about a week I would get gross white snot like build-up on my tongue. I went and asked "Vik" what this was and if it was infected. He explained that it was nothing to worry about unless it was green or yellow.
That never happened and I never experienced and swelling either. I loved that part since all my friends that had it done swelled up so bad they could hardly talk. Although I am a person that craves and eats ice constantly. So I am thinking that, that might have something to do with it. Again I said "think", so don't hold me to that.
A few weeks later I was looking at it in the mirror and that is when I decided that I wanted to do it again. Went right back to "Vik" and did it. It's in the front of the old one. This one hurt during the piercing because he went so slow. I asked why he had to go slow and he explained that I had a cluster of veins that he had to dodge. If they hit a vein, it won't stop bleeding unless you go to the hospital and get it fused with a laser. Of course after he said that, it made the pain all ok that I felt it. For the second time I left happy with a big smile on my face and went and bought mouth wash again. I went through the same healing process with that one that I did the first. Just one slight problem that I came across was that this new one was that the bottom ball on the barbell sat on my gum line and rubbed against my teeth. This caused no pain, but I looked in the mirror and saw that it seemed to have made my gumline receed a little and my teeth were a little l oose.
I went back and talked to "Vik" and he suggested a soft vinyl barbell. But I just stuck with it and it seemed to just take care of itself. My teeth tightened back up and everything is a-okay! And yet again no swelling again! YEAH! I still have them both in. I love them and I am ready to put my 3rd.
