Ever since I was young, I've loved the look of all body mods. So, sometime last year when my parents finally gave me the go ahead to get pierced whenever I wanted, I was thrilled! ...Sadly, my lack of funds kept me from going out and getting my lip and eyebrow done like I'd always wanted.

Soon after I got the news from my parents, I told a friend of mine about my predicament. Lucky for me she had just gotten a job and was willing to get me a piercing for my sixteenth birthday, which was about a month away.

This in itself was also a stroke of luck for me because it gave me time to think about what I wanted to get done. I couldn't get a facial piercings because my parents didn't seem too keen on that for the moment. So that pretty much left my ears, because at the time I didn't have much interest in getting anywhere else mostly because I was too afraid of it hurting alot or something going wrong... Up until this point I'd only had my lobes done in a doctor's office when I was about four, so I really didn't know what to expect for pain or anything. Plus I was nervous about going into a piecing place., I'd never been in one before... This was a whole new experience to me!

Anyway, at the time I didn't even think there could be any sites on the internet on the subject of body modification... So I pretty much figured out what I wanted on my own. I decided that a rook piercing would look really neat and would also be pretty original, seeing as I hadn't seen anyone in my area with it or anything.

Finally the big day came, about a few days before my birthday my friend and I went to the local piercing shop after school.

When we walked in, I was happy to see how nice and friendly everyone working there seemed. After waiting about 10 minutes for the piercer who was working that day to finish what he was doing. He smiled when he came up to us, and asked us what we wanted to get that day. I told him I wanted to get "this part of my ear pierced" seeing as at the time I didn't know what the piercing was called, let alone if it even had a name.

He said it was no problem and asked me to look in the shops display cases and find a small ring or barbell I'd want to have in my cartilage.

I chose an awesome blue CBR and went into the room with him so he could mark up my ear. The placement took a little while to get just right, seeing as I wanted as I didn't want it too far forward or anything. After the placement was perfect, he changed his gloves as I took a seat in this awkward looking chair in the middle of the room. While he was opening a new sterile needle from its package, he joked around with me and told me it probably wouldn't hurt all that much at all. This was good news for me because I was already clenching my friends hand and generally freaking out.

But good god did he ever lie about it not hurting very much!

I can't remember if he clamped me or not. I mainly remember the feeling of the needle going through my ear. When it pierced hat first layer of skin right before the cartilage, there was I tiny -pop!- and I remember thinking: "Wow! That wasn't so bad!"

But then he started going through the cartilage and good gravy did that ever hurt!!!

There was a bigger pop this time and then it was over for real. By then I was extremely light headed, so Christian, the piercer gave me some water and told me to take all the time I needed while still joking with my friend.

When I finally felt better, he gave me a sheet with instructions on how to care for my new piercing. Then my friend paid...about 45 dollars if I remember correctly. Then we went on our merry way!

The healing went very well until the night of my birthday party, when it unfortunately got knocked around a lot by friends who were trying to hug me. Especially one of them who for some reason kept hugging me and knocking his arm into my fresh piercing... I must say getting my rook done BEFORE my birthday wasn't the smartest idea. I must suggest that if you get a piercing for your birthday maybe you should get it done sometime after you celebrate because people really seem to be much more careless on such occasions...

After that everything went really well with my healing, the sea salt soaks I did really soothed it and I found that ibuprofen really helped with the pain and slight swelling.

I must say that it took a lot longer then the 6 to 8 weeks my piercer told me about for it to heal. During this time my ear was often infected and it was pretty painful to sleep on. It took quite a few months for it to heal properly... It also took about the same amount of time for a girl I met quite recently who also had her rook done.

Since then, I have gotten more piercings on my ears, have started stretching AND! I finally got my lip pierced sometime after Christmas this year!

Unfortunately that piercing didn't quite go as planned....but that's another story I guess.

Until next time then!

Happy piercing!
