For the last month or so, I had been contemplating what I wanted to do with my ears, as far as a project. Already having my left tragus pierced, as well as 1 upper helix on each side, I wanted something more unique. So I started searching bmezine.com for cool piercings that I hadn't seen around yet. That's when I came across the daith.

However, much to my surprise I had never, in all of my endeavors, seen anyone with a daith piercing. This is probably what drew me to it the most. Already having a tragus piercing, which are much more popular now than when I had it done, I wanted something no one else had.
I had had my right tragus pierced also, but changing the jewelry one too many times caused it to reject. Therefore I had to take it out and let it heal over. So, having this spare jewelry gave me an idea. Why not pierce my right daith with that jewelry? It was a 5/16" 16g CBR, which wasn't too big but still noticeable. Next step: talk to the piercer.
The only person I will trust with my piercings is Justin from Blue Horseshoe. He's pierced me 6 times before, and they have all turned out great. It is also the nicest looking, most sanitary place around Hampton Roads.
So one day I went in to talk to him about my daith. He told me it'd be $15 because I already had jewelry. And while I hadn't necessarily planned on getting it done that day, I bit the bullet and did it anyway.
Because I was using my own jewelry, I had to have it sterilized, which would take 20 minutes. So, while this was going on, I filled out the handy paperwork and paid for it. Then it was go time.
We went back to his booth, and he got me to sit in the nifty chair while he set up his tools. First, he put on rubber gloves and cleaned the site. After discarding these gloves, he donned a second pair to mark the spot. Once I approved, he discarded these and retrieved a third pair to do the deed.
After positioning the needle on the bottom of the daith, he got me to take a deep breath in. When I exhaled, he pushed the needle through. I didn't even realize he had done it until he said "Alright," and reached over to grab the ring. BUT, what did hurt was when he had to push the needle through the newly created -- and might I add tender -- hole to insert the jewelry. Yet inserting the jewelry didn't hurt a bit. I didn't even feel the transition, which I wish I could have said for the tragus.
Once the ring was in place and the ball put on, he cleaned up the blood. There was maybe 2 Q-tips worth, not much more. Then I was handed a mirror to look at it. It looked perfect sitting there. The last thing he had to do was clean up the extra blood. Surprisingly, for a new piercing, it didn't hurt to have him rubbing around and messing with it. It was now time to show it off. I thanked him and left.
Having my windows down in the car made for an interesting sensation, with the wind blowing against the fresh piercing. I was so proud of it. My ear was throbbing a little, and it felt warm, but I didn't care.
Cleaning it wasn't as hard as I had originally anticipated. The next morning, after my shower, I went through my usual routine cleaning for my piercings. Using ear care antiseptic I had, I cleaned around both the top and bottom of my daith, removing congealed blood from the top. I then sprayed my H2Ocean saltwater spray on it, which feels good when it's cold.
Through the next few days, I removed the rest of the blood secretions. These eventually became lymph secretions, which are normal. However, being a week old today, it has over the last 2 days become swollen and sore. I went and talked to Justin today about it, and he said it looks like a healed piercing that's pissed off. This is good, because it's not red or inflamed. It feels like it did the day after when it started to swell.
I have always liked piercings, however much maintenance they are. They are my way to be unique and express myself. I will end my project by removing my left helix and using that CBR to pierce my left rook. Some people will like them, and others won't. But that is their decision and I respect it.
